Week 5 - Yulia (photoblog)

I was wondering if there are any places in SL where people could express their political views and participate in rallies. So I decided to return to Red Square and see if there were any supporters of Pussy Riot - Russian punk rock band that has been accused of inappropriate behaviour in church. They were sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment. The verdict was announced only a few days ago. Out of curiosity, I went inside the St Basil's Cathedral and saw absolutely no one :)

I had some issues with teleporting from one island to another. For some reason, I couldn't get to Virtual Spain island. And only half an hour later I managed to get in. Can't say I'm impressed with the environment. The background music is really annoying, it plays too loud when people talk to each other and you can barely hear what they say. I want to find a school where I could sign up for lessons and see how it works for me. My Spanish is getting a bit rusty, so it would be good to have some practice.
Virtual Spain

The last couple of weeks were a bit rough, so what do we girls like to do when we're stressed, tired and bored? That's right - we go on a shopping spree :) I still don't have any Linden bucks, just waiting for that researcher to get back to me about getting some moola for participating in her project. But they say even window shopping is good. I know it certainly works for me, so here I come.

Belleza (in Spanish "Beauty")

Customer service desk is unattended, so I guess I'll just browse around and see if they give any free stuff away. I wonder if they have beauty salons, where people can come and pamper themselves. What I really need is an hour long full body massage, facial, maybe new hair-do, manicure and pedicure. Do they offer such things in SL? Once I get those 500 Linden bucks, I wouldn't mind spoiling my avatar :)

Window shopping

Ok, looks like they're selling some foundation cremes. They're probably skins, but the packaging looks like it's cosmetics. Nothing's free and these skins are pretty expensive. One set costs $2,500!!! I think it's ridiculous! You know what really surprises me? Most female models advertising cosmetics (or skins), clothes and other stuff just look vulgar and bit slutty (pardon the language) to me. If you remember, the name of this shop is Belleza, which translates as Beauty. So is that how women's beauty perceived here in this shop and SL in general? And I wonder who the creators of this shop are - men or women? Is it women's interpretation of women's beauty or men's?

Trying to look more natural

I couldn't find any free stuff that would make me look natural, so I decided to do it the kiwi way :) My avatar now refuses to wear high heel shoes, in fact any shoes. And I took off that bright jacket and my sunglasses. I quite like casual style - blue jeans and a white top. This is what I would wear myself in the summer. I don't like bare feet, but if I find a pair of cool jandals, I'd certainly buy them for my avatar. Until then siberianchick won't be wearing any shoes.

That's it for this week folks. I welcome your thoughts on interpretation of beauty in SL.

  1. It would have been interesting to look a little further for anything on Pussy Riot - I'm sure there would be something.

    1. Yeah, I think it's an interesting case. But you know, I'm wondering if SL is used as a platform for expressing political opinions, human rights advocacy, etc. In some countries Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networks are banned, so I assume SL could be an alternative?
